Savanna Landscape
Cundinamarca, Colombia
Oil pastel on sugar cane paper
This oil pastel shows a typical adobe farmhouse set in the Andes Mountains in the Cundinamarca department of Colombia, outside the Bogotá savanna. This beautiful region features waterfalls, lakes, rivers, and mountainous meadows in varying shades of green, with an amazing variety of flowers, art, pottery, and good food.
I chose to enhance the pottery clay jar to highlight a typical garden decor of this region, handmade locally in terracotta. Pottery is an ancient artisan tradition from the Muisca people, passed down through generations, reminding us how much we love and appreciate our artisans and the importance of keeping these traditions alive. It’s wonderful to see how they are part of our modern interior and exterior decor.
For this painting, I used oil pastel over sugar cane paper, created in Colombia by chemist Jorge Humberto Borrero. He used sugar cane waste to obtain a high-resistance cellulose fiber, revolutionizing the paper industry in Colombia.
